Australia Post Worker Jailed for $100K Card Theft

An Australia Post worker is going to prison for stealing bank cards out of secure mail, then using them to fund online gambling and high-end purchases. Authorities say the scheme pulled in more than $100,000. The man, identified as M. P. C., was found guilty of abusing his position to lift dozens of cards. He'll serve until December 2027. Two co-conspirators were also identified.

C. personally pocketed $30,000 in cash and goods. That includes two 24-carat gold bracelets he bought just 12 hours before his arrest. The thefts ran for 15 months. His defence tried for a community sentence. Judge Jillian Kiely rejected it, ruling the offence too serious for anything short of custody.

In court, C. called his situation "fucked" and said he "needed money." His gambling addiction took hold in 2024. A sharp fall for a man who'd been a model employee since joining the postal service in 2007. Colleagues and family were shocked by the charges.

The sentencing judge called it a significant breach of trust in delivering items safely to customers. Australia Post said it worked closely with NSW Police throughout the investigation and continually reviews systems to strengthen operational security.
