Football Sponsorship Needs Trust, Not Just Visibility

Football pulls a crowd like nothing else, and the sponsorship cash follows it. Spain beat Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final in front of 1.5 billion viewers. FIFA counts the global fanbase at more than 5 billion. Historian Tom Holland calls it the most popular pastime in human history.

No wonder operators keep circling. Research from SportFive, cited by 1xCare, found sponsors get 41% higher product use and 40% higher likability among fans. Among 16 to 24 year olds, 65% engage with football content on social media. Chris Bird sits on the 1xCare Advisory Committee, and he's blunt about what that attention buys you. Visibility isn't trust.

"Putting a name on a shirt or around a stadium is the easy part," he said. "What matters is the behaviour behind it."

Bird has been in the room. He's a former COO of Manchester City FC, ex-CEO of the Raheem Sterling Foundation, and an advisor to Betfred founder Fred Done. Supporters treat clubs as tribal institutions, in his reading. Partnerships that build genuine connection win over time. The ones that don't get found out.

For operators, his advice starts well before any logo goes up. Agree your responsible gambling messaging. Sort age controls. Give people direct access to help. Educate players, club staff and commercial teams on match fixing and inside information. Measurement, he argues, has to be independent. Calling a partnership responsible is empty without proof of reach and results.

1xCare launched this year, chaired by Simon Westbury. It's an independent body, kept separate from 1xBet, which holds over 35 licences and sponsors FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and the Confederation of African Football. Those three partners carry 442 million, 235 million and 20 million followers respectively.

Bird won't defend the industry's record wholesale. Next week he's off to the Madrid Football Summit, where he'll meet clubs, regulators, governing bodies and player welfare staff, and push for standards that hold up across borders. "I am not attending to defend everything the industry has done," he said. "I am there to help improve what it does next."
